We are a secluded and remote lodge on the Indian Ocean, far away from the hustle and bustle of city life. You can decide that this is a bit of a challenge, but we see that as part of the charm. Afterall, if it was so easy to reach us, the lodge will not be secluded or private. Make sure to come for a couple of days or weeks, once here, it will be worth it! And you will also experience a bit more of this amazing country.
If travelling with your own vehicle, the lodge is accessible from Tanga in the North (approximately 90km) or Dar es Salaam in the South, either through Saadani National Park (approximately 175km) or around the park (approximately 300km). A motorcycle is a great way to travel in Tanzania, and perhaps the most fun to reach us. Please note that the last stretch of road is sandy and only accessible for 4×4 vehicles and dual-purpose motorcycles. Riders must be comfortable with a bit of sand.
Public bus transport is available for the very adventurous, young and wild at heart, from Dar es Salaam and Arusha/Moshi, but not advisable without a guide or if you are not familiar with the local culture and language.
The Tanga and Pangani-Kijoni Airstrips are served by two domestic airlines, Auric Air and Coastal Airlines and can shorten the road transfer to the lodge.
FROM DAR ES SALAAM
Direct transfer by vehicle through Saadani National Park – Approximately 175Km, 4-5 Hours, 300USD per vehicle (max 4 people) plus 35USD per person park fees. Unless you travel with a local registered vehicle, have time and want to see the park, this is a long journey and not the most comfortable. Unfortunately, motorcycles are not allowed to travel through the park.
Direct transfer by vehicle around Saadani National Park – Approximately 300Km, 5-6 Hours, 300USD per vehicle (max 4 people) one way. This can be arranged if you want to experience the local roads and scenery. If you are on a motorcycle, the best way to reach us from Dar.
Daily two local flights to Tanga with Auric Air (one way for non-Tanzania residents current cost approximately 217USD). Then add on transfer from Tanga to Mahali Maalum lodge (see below).
Auric Air also offers flights from Dar es Salaam to Pangani-Kijoni Airstrip (roughly 25km away from Mahali Maalum) for a minimum of 2 passengers at a time. Cost for 2 passengers is 394USD one way. Transfer from the Airstrip to Mahali Maalum Lodge at no extra cost. Probably the best way to reach us if you are 2 or more and want a quick and troublesome journey.

The road is currently under construction to be tarred, and hopefully this will soon be a more comfortable option.
Please contact us if we can assist with any travel arrangements or advice. We are happy to help and make suggestions to make your transfer as comfortable, economic and trouble-free as possible.
